Dr.Hermmann Gundert

Kerala is most grateful to Dr.Gundert.The government and the people together have installed a Bronze statue of Dr.Gundert. This is perhaps the only statue of a foreigner to be installed by independent India. A road has been named after him. Above all the Gundert foundation school is unique in the sense that the rich and the underprivileged are educated together, the rich paying moderate fees while those who cannot afford are given free education, books and uniforms. Today out of 426 students 103 get free education.Murkoth Ramunny is the President of Dr. Hermann Gundert Foundation.

A foreign missionary from Tamil Nadu came to Thalassery in 1815 and started what is now the B.E.M.P High school. In 1840 Gundert was asked to look after it, which he did for couple of years.
